Being better is better&#8230; nobody is passionate about something they suck at.<\/p>\n<p>What is the difference between fantastic and average? It is much less about natural talent and more about a talent for practicing&#8230; works for anything. It is actually your fault for not practicing. You just have to put in the time. &#8220;We need a rage to master&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What do you help your users do well?<\/p>\n<p>Book: The 4-hour workweek<br \/>\nYou figure out how to devote more of your time to other things you really and there is usually some (if you&#8217;re lucky) overlap to this and your worklife.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Use telepathy<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">there are mirror neurons &#8211; inference &#8211; faces meanings<br \/>\nyou have to see people&#8217;s faces when doing usability<br \/>\nresolution of the simulation depends on your experiences &#8211; need to have felt your user&#8217;s pain<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Serendipity<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">brains look for and match patterns &#8211; &#8220;ipod shuffle is psychic&#8221;<br \/>\nadd randomness (psuedo) to create serendipity<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. The dog ears design principle<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">real physics in the iphone scroll (bounce) &#8211; subtle little real things help &#8211; things feel more alive<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Joy<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">make products that produce joy &#8211; joyful experience &#8211; playing &#8211; learning &#8211; enjoying<br \/>\nnot necessarily fun or funny &#8211; joy<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Inspire first person language<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">shouldn&#8217;t be about you &#8211; your testimonials should be about the users not about the company<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Tshirt first development<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">what does it say about someone that they are one of your users?<br \/>\nit should say something that a user wants to announce they are one of your users<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Easter Eggs and other treats<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">little extras for users to find<br \/>\n&#8220;a smile in the mind&#8221; book<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Tools for evangelism<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">give your users away to woo other users &#8211; that helps them be better when they are getting better or becoming passionate about your product<br \/>\nhelp users defend your product to other people<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. You area a&#8230;<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">stage fright &#8211; picture everyone as prey animals (bunny) &#8211; the fear goes away<br \/>\nhelp your users manage stress<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Exercise the brain and improve their body<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">brain age video game is a best seller &#8211; exercise that best helps brain is plan old exercise<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>11. Give them superpowers quickly<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">swift.3d &#8211; user must do something cool in a short period of time<br \/>\ndo experts know more? yes &#8211; are there shortcuts?<br \/>\npatterns patterns patterns<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>12. Make your product reflect feeling<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">give folks a way to reflect how they are doing (WTF button)<br \/>\nlet them off the hook &#8211; NOT an idiot<br \/>\nhow do they feel about the confusion?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>15. Help with reinvestment of mental resource into new problems<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">expert never shrinks the size of their list &#8211; just add new interesting things<br \/>\nallow people to focus and devote all of their attention to certain things<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>16. Create a culture of support<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">user as a hero and becoming experts &#8211; helps them become mentors at the end<br \/>\nwant to get them mentoring early and encourage to help users<br \/>\nno dumb questions and comfort in asking questions and no dumb ANSWERS<br \/>\nencourage people to start answering questions and get the community asking and answering<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do NOT insist on inclusivity<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">don&#8217;t wait for the experts &#8211; jargon: passionate users &#8220;talk different&#8221;<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t throw everyone together make sure there are places for expert and beginners<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>18. Practice seductive opacity<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">mystery anticipation curiosity &#8211; loved by the brain<br \/>\nsuspense followed by an important reward relaxes body etc.<br \/>\ndigital world has raised the value of real tangible things<br \/>\nunboxing photos &#8211; the experience of opening your new geek physical thing<br \/>\nthink about physical objects &#8211; they matter<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>19. Atoms are NOT old school<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal\">senses are very important &#8211; think about it with a product<br \/>\npetted rabbits had lower cholesterol &#8211; touch important<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>19.5.
