Beautiful and clever solutions under the hood mean nothing without an elegant user interface.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I don&#8217;t know what percentage of our time on any computer-based project is spent getting the equipment to work right, but if I had a gardener who spent as much of her time fixing her shovel as we spend fooling with our computers, I&#8217;d buy her a good shovel. &#8211; Erasmus Smums<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler. &#8211; Albert Einstein<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The problem is that applications are like isolated cities.<br \/>\nWord &lt;-&gt; Photoshop &lt;-&gt; Mathematica example of the application centric model<\/p>\n<p>What does an interface do?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create content<\/li>\n<li>Navigate content<\/li>\n<li>Select content<\/li>\n<li>Transform content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Everything is an outgrowth of these four basic transformations.<\/p>\n<p>Just like Asimov&#8217;s laws of robotics:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>An interface shall not harm your content or, through inaction, allow your content to come to harm.<\/li>\n<li>An interface shall not waste you time or require you to do more work than is strictly neccesary<\/li>\n<li>An interface shall not allow itself to get into a state where it cannot manipulate content.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Content is Everything<\/strong><br \/>\nThe desktop is not about content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does the web have better examples?<\/strong><br \/>\nLanguage has untapped power.<\/p>\n<p>What does the desktop do?<br \/>\n<em>It lets you create a state to enter content<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>command line interfaces<\/li>\n<li>the URL bar<\/li>\n<li>Spotlight\/Google Desktop searching<\/li>\n<li>Humanized&#8217;s Enso Launcher<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Categorization<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tags and search undermine forced hierarchy on the web already<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Navigation<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let content be content<\/li>\n<li>Let search be search &#8211; don&#8217;t force people to categorize too much<\/li>\n<li>Let 2D content be 2D content (windows are 3D)<\/li>\n<li>Let the user&#8217;s structure be (do not force hierarchies upon them)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>huge 2D desktop: enso<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monday, 12 March 2007 @ 1700 Aza Raskin, Pres, Humanized Presentation (or facsimile):\u00a0 http:\/\/www.humanized.com\/presentations\/Ajaxian\/ GOMS modeling: allows you to take an interface and figure out how long it will take a user to use an interface.
